The Patient Safety Officer (PSO) is responsible for the identification of patient safety events including Near Misses, Precursor and Adverse Events, their review, analysis and assessment, the development of strategies to mitigate or prevent them, the identification of safety defects and the education of safe, patient centered care. The PSO must have a strong background in the broad scope of healthcare safety science principles. Experience in educating and problem solving is a must. Most importantly, the PSO must be able to think critically, identify problems and work cooperatively to develop and implement solutions with departments throughout CKHS. Analytical as well as creative thinking skills, strong communication skills and the ability to foster multidisciplinary teamwork are essential to the position. The PSO will identify potential risks at CKHS sites and use appropriate strategies, including education, to increase awareness of patient safety and promote reduction of risk. The PSO plays a key role in CKHS Patient Safety Initiatives and in promoting a culture that emphasizes safety in all aspects of its operations.
Education and Training:
Bachelors of Science in Nursing required
Completed MSN or enrolled in a current program of study preferred
Experience and Knowledge:
Five years related clinical experience with some experience in critical care preferred
3 years of experience in Patient Safety or Risk Management
Root Cause Analysis
Pennsylvania Patient Safety Reporting System knowledge
Education and/or Teaching Experience
Registration, Licensure and/or Certification:
Valid Pennsylvania nursing license
Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) or equivalent preferred
Must have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel
Experience in the use of databases such as Access preferred
Working knowledge of problem solving tools required i.e. Root Cause Analysis, FMEA, Cause and Effect Analysis
Familiarity with the use of the PAPSRS database
Knowledge and/or experience in Performance Improvement methodologies such as PDSA, Rapid Cycle Change, Team Training, Lean or 6 Sigma preferred
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written required
Department-Specific Competencies:
Ability to utilize multiple tools for identification of potential risks and hazards
Ability to research and identify applicable standards, regulations, best practices, etc related to healthcare setting
Ability to analyze data, formulate action plans, and demonstrate effectiveness of plan
Ability to develop and employ appropriate mitigation strategies and techniques
Ability to effectively communicate rationale for change
Provide appropriate education to increase awareness of safety in a healthcare setting
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
